In essence it’s the same song, but this version has a bit of a lo-fi R&B glam-pop vibe - and that works surprisingly well.

“Rhythms from West Africa are integrated with voices from Harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners.”

Romare uses samples from songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and combines this with twostep, all to explore the connection between African and African-American music. The result is a very forward-thinking, unique four-track EP Meditations on Afrocentrism (which is out now on Black Acre) that takes the best out of both worlds. Just like the artwork, it is a collage - an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. This is how Jai Paul would sound like if he’d spend a Summer recording in Africa. Highly recommended.

Not one but two (!) new jams from Gold Panda, and both songs come with a video too so that’s like four things but in one post. These two new songs, Mountain and Financial District, are taken from a 7” which is out now on Ghostly, and see Gold Panda explore new heights/sounds but maintain his distinctive wobbly beats. Mountain is even a bit spiritual if you ask me.

Flight Facilities have unveiled their third single With You, yet another groovy and sexy disco-banger. Grovesnor (that’s Rob Smoughton, drummer in Hot Chip) takes care of the vocals this time and they are sweet as ever. The video for With You is a fully animated, beautiful short film that tells a story about love, loss and robots. Let’s start dreaming about a full-length, shall we?

I Predict A Graceful Expulsion. Told you some time ago this album was brilliant; well, it still is and you can decide for yourself, as it’s available for streaming below. If you like sad, melancholic songs with a dark soul vibe, sung by a smokey voice and lots of charisma, uou will love definitely love Cold Specks. Out next week via Mute, you can pre-order it here. (via)

Belgian bands are rarely featured on here, but every now and then I stumble upon something that actually catches my interest. Stacks can be filed right next to space’y pop of the likes of John Maus, Molly Nilsson and a more disco’ish version of Ariel Pink. His first track Dream You has a bit of an 80’s vibe, a full-length Voices is on its way.

You know that one band you see pop up at all the blogs you read and love but never end up listening to for some unknown reason? Well, I have that with Lower Dens. Excuse me: I had that with Lower Dens. Should have known I’d love them though, as Beach House love them and I love everything Beach House do. Finally got around to listening to their latest full-length Nootropics and I’m instantly impressed with the Baltimore-based outfit’s moody dream pop. Someone called them Kraftwerk meets Beach House, which seems about right. Nootropics is out now, pretty sure I’ll be spending a lot of time with it - so should you.
