Girls’ new single Lawrence doesn’t appear on their Father, Son, Holy Ghost, but is a tribute to Lawrence Hayward of Felt. The single is out on a heart-shaped 7” via Turnstile/True Panther later this month, yet available for streaming above. Here’s an excerpt from a letter, written by the Girls frontman Christopher Owens, about Lawrence. (picture)

I once wrote this song and wondered what you would sing to it, I could sometimes hear your voice but I didn’t dare write down any words. I never thought for a second you would ever hear it, I wondered if you would like it, all that. I called it Lawrence, after you. To send it to you now is incredible for me, I want to show you I’m thankful. You gave me something to love, or in other words you gave me love itself. You took something that can sometimes feel so common and dull and brought it back to life with so much beauty and verse. You gave me happiness, and you still do.

Girls’ Christopher Owens tries to seduce the girl of his dreams by showing of his belly and his fancy car in the video for Honey Bunny, taken from their Father, Son, Holy Ghost.

Honey Bunny is the second joint taken from Girls’ sophomore - and brilliant - effort Father, Son, Holy Ghost, out on September 13. Here’s what the band’s Christopher Owens says about it: (via)

Honey Bunny was my 19th song to write. I wrote it on my birthday in 2008. I think the fact that it’s No. 19 gives it a little perspective. My first songs were kind of like, “Ahhhh, Help!” This one has a bit of swagger to it, and some reflection about my mother. It’s a special song to me now, not for the sassy swagger bits as much the parts about Mama. But I think for the listener, it could be the exact opposite. The energy and optimism and determination in it is quite appealing. But that’s the great thing about these things, right? The fact that all of us are hearing something entirely different. I believe that. And so, in 2011, surfer guitar still rules.

Girls will release their sophomore effort Father, Son, Holy Ghost on September 12/13. KEXP played a new tune titled Vomit earlier today and the band are giving away a free mp3 of the song now. Vomit features a church choir and sounds a lot like the songs on their Broken Dreams Club EP - a romantic, melancholic slowburner.
